The Burren & Co. Clare

A unique geological outcropping of the ice age which has occurred in only a few places on earth. Burren, from the gaelic boireann, means a rocky place. Glaciers scraped across this area of Co. Clare in the west of Ireland, alternately grinding rock and dumping soil. The Burren is known for its rare alpine flowers. Because this area began to be farmed 4,000 years ago, there are many significant burial sites and megalithic monuments, among the most famous is the Poulnabrone Portal Dolmen.
